Five dead, six injured in road accident near Rajkot


Five people were killed and six others injured in a collision between a jeep and a state transport bus near Kutchiayadad village on the Rajkot-Ahmedabad highway in Gujarat today.


The deceased were travelling in the ill-fated jeep and were on their way to Chotila when the mishap occurred this afternoon.


According to police sources, the jeep driver was trying to overtake the bus when the mishap occurred. The bus was proceeding to Ahmedabad from Junagadh.


Four of the victims died on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries on way to a hospital in Rajkot, the sources said. The injured were admitted to Rajkot civil hospital, they said.


Three of the five deceased have been identified as Vipul Bhojani (36), Jivanbhai Koli (40) and Sitaram Purohit (35). A woman and a child were yet to be identified, the sources added.

Women head constable commits suicide in Rajkot


A young woman head constable allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan at her residence here last night.


According to police sources, Laxmiben Sisodiya (32), who was working at the Mahila Police Station, took the extreme step after she had a heated argument with her father Jabbar Singh over purchasing an air-conditioner. She was living in Kidvainagar area.


Her father's refusal to purchase the air-conditioner could be one of the reasons behind the suicide, they said. However, police are investigating the matter.

NRI businessman Shantilal Kansagara dies at 96


Non-resident Indian (NRI) businessman Shantilal Nathalal Kansagara, popularly known as SNK and whose family was a promoter of low-cost carrier SpiceJet, died at the Wockhardt hospital here last night after a brief illness.


He was 96. He is survived by his wife, four sons and four daughters.


The Kansagaras have promoted the Malwood Group, which has business interests in Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, Nigeria and the United Kingdom.


Three of Mr Kansagara's sons are settled in London, while one is in Kenya.

Displaying rare determination and conviction, a tenth standard physically challenged girl Hetal Laxmanbhai Gohel, who has no hands, is giving her Board examination without using the help of a "writer".

Hetal writes her paper with the help of her feet with so much ease that it is difficult to imagine she has no hands. The girl has, over the years, taught herself to write with her feet.

Appearing for the examination at the Kadvibai Virani High School here, she uses one foot to hold the paper in place and the second to write her answers. She is a student of the Vasudev Vidyalaya in the city.

Hetal belongs to a poor family. Her father Laxmanbhai is a labourer who drops her to school every day for the examination. Hetal can also draw good pictures with her feet.

In all, 164 students with different kinds of physical disabilities are appearing for the Board examinations at various centres, official sources added.

20 people hurt in fire caused by overturned tanker in Gujarat


At least twenty people suffered burn injuries when a fuel tanker overturned and caught fire, engulfing their huts, near Jasapar village in Jamkandorana taluka of this district in Gujarat early today.


The victims were sleeping when the mishap occurred. Nine of the injured were admitted to Junagadh civil hospital, where condition of five was stated to be critical, hospital sources said.


The other injured were being treated at Dhoraji hospital, sources said. Police are investigating the incident.

Couple end lives, daughter dies in fire in Rajkot


A young couple allegedly committed suicide and their two-year-old daughter died in a fire at their house at Chamuda Society, near Ranchhoddasji Ashram in the city, police said today.


According to the police, Nitinbhai Koli (30) and his wife Sangita (25) had an altercation last night over some matter and set themselves ablaze at their house. Their daughter Jigna was burnt as their house caught fire.


Nitinbhai and his daughter died on the spot, while Sangita was admitted to the Civil Hospital with severe burn injuries to which she succumbed later, the sources said. Further investigations are on, they added.

New train between Rajkot and Porbandar from Friday


The Western Railway has introduced a new tri-weekly express between Rajkot and Porbandar from today.


Train No 19571 Rajkot-Porbandar Tri-Weekly Express will depart at 0720 hrs from Rajkot on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and arrive Porbander at 1205 hrs on the same day.


Similarly, Train No 19572 Porbandar-Rajkot Tri-Weekly Express will depart at 1430 hrs from Porbandar on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and arrive Rajkot at 1850 hrs on same day.


This train will stop at Bhakti Nagar, Gondal, Virpur, Jetalsar, Wansjaliya, Dhoraji, Upleta and Jamjodhpur in both the directions.


The train consists of AC Chair Car, II Seating and General II class.
