Amitabh Kant gets two-year extension as CEO of NITI Aayog

Former bureaucrat Amitabh Kant was today given a two-year extension in his tenure as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the NITI Aayog, the government's think tank.
"The ACC has approved the extension of tenure of Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog for a further period of two years beyond 30.06.2019 i.e. up to 30.06.2021, on the same terms and conditions, as approved earlier," an official press release said.
Amitabh Kant, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1980 batch (Kerala cadre), had been appointed as CEO of NITI Aayog in January 2016 after his superannuation. His last assignment in the Government was as Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).
He had held additional charge of the post of CEO, NITI Aayog from December 31, 2015 following the completion of the tenure of Sindhushree Khullar.
He was also the Chairman of the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC).
Kant is the author of “Branding India – An Incredible Story” and has been a key driver of the “Incredible India” and “God’s Own Country” campaigns which positioned and branded India and Kerala State as leading tourism destinations.  
He also conceptualized and executed the “AtithiDevoBhavah” – “Guest is God” campaign to train taxi drivers, guides and immigration officials and make them stakeholders in the tourism development process.  
Kant was also the National Project Director of the Rural Tourism Project of UNDP which made a paradigm shift in spreading tourism to Indian villages which had core-competency in handicrafts, handloom and culture.
Kant had earlier served as Chairman and Managing Director of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC); Joint Secretary,  Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; Secretary, Tourism, Government of Kerala; Managing Director, Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation; District Collector, Kozikhode; and Managing Director, Matsyafed.  
Kant studied at Modern School, Delhi before graduating in Economics from St. Stephen's College, University of Delhi and completing M. A. from Jawaharlal Nehru University. He is a Chevening scholar.
