Rainfall, thunderstorms likely over northwest India during April 15-17 due to western disturbance: IMD

Isolated to scattered rain or thundershowers would occur over Western Himalayan Region, including  Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, today under the influence of a Western Disturbance that lies over Iran and neighbourhood and is expected to move east-northeastwards across Afghanistan and northwest India during April 15-17.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a bulletin here on Sunday evening that, under its influence, an inducted cyclonic circulation would form over southwest Rajasthan at lower tropospheric levels tomorrow.
The western disturbance will be supported by moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea as well as from the Bay of Bengal, with a confluence of both the streams over central India and neighbourhood during April 16-17.
"Under the influence of above weather systems, isolated to scattered rain/thundershower would occur over Western Himalayan Region (WHR) includes Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 15th. Its intensity and spread would increase thereafter with fairly widespread to widespread rain/thundershower over the region on 16th & 17th and decrease significantly thereafter. Heavy rain/shower would occur over Jammu & Kashmir on 16th," the bulletin said.
"Thundersquall with wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph accompanied with rain/hail & lightning at a few places would occur over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 16th & 17th," it said.
"Thunderstorm/duststorm accompanied with gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph, light rainfall and lightning at isolated places would occur over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on 15th," it said.
The bulletin said thundersquall/duststorm accompanied with gusty winds speed reaching 60-70 kmph, and lightning is very likely at a few places and light to moderate rainfall at many places very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan on April 16-17.
A thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds speed reaching 40-50 kmph, light rain and lightning would occur at isolated places over Gujarat state, north Maharashtra, on April 16 and over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Jharkhand and Odisha during April 16-17.
As far as Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) are concerned, the bulletin said generally cloudy conditions and thunderstorms, accompanied with rainfall and lightning, were likely at many places and isolated hailstorm and squall with wind speed of 60-70 kmph likely at isolated places during April 16-17.
