Eight persons dead after boat capsizes off Karwar in Karnataka

Eight persons died and one was reported missing after a boat carrying 26 passengers from an offshore island of Kurumgarh capsized off Karwar in Karnataka today, official sources said.
The mishap occurred when the boat, carrying 26 devotees from the island of Kurumgarh to the Rabindranath Tagore Beach near Karwar, capsized at about 1500 hours today.
The Indian Navy and the Indian Coast Guard, on being informed by the district administration at about 1645 hours, immediately despatcheed helicopters and fast interceptor crafts for rescue operations to the scene of the accident. Diving teams from Karwar were also deployed, a spokesman for the Navy said.
"Of 26 passengers, 17 people were immediately rescued by civil boats. 8 bodies have been recovered by naval units. Search is on for 1 missing person," the spokesman said on micro-blogging site Twitter.
