Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the 15th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) convention, the high-profile gathering of non-resident Indians (NRIs) and persons of Indian origin (PIOs) -- here tomorrow.

The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr. Pravind Jugnauth, will be the chief guest on the occasion, an official press release said.

Mr. Himanshu Gulati, Member of Parliament of Norway, will be the Special Guest while Mr. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi, Member of Parliament of New Zealand will be the Guest of Honour.

The theme of PBD 2019 is "Role of Indian Diaspora in Building New India". This is the first time that the convention, which got off to a start today with the Youth PBD, is being organized in Varanasi.

The convention dates have been chosen in such a way as to enable delegatess to visit the Kumbh Mela at Prayag Raj and then travel to Delhi for the Republic Day celebrations.

The valedictory session will be held on January 23, when President Ram Nath Kovind will present the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards to selected NRIs and PIOs for their contribution to various fields both in India and abroad.

The 1st PBD was celebrated on 9th January, 2003 in New Delhi. January 9 was chosen as the day to celebrate PBD as it was on this day in 1915 that Mahatma Gandhi, had returned to India from South Africa.

PBD, now held once in every two years, provides a platform to the overseas Indian community to engage with the government and reconnect with their roots.
