The President has appointed artist and sculptor Uttam Pacharne as Chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi, the national academy of art.
"He is a widely respected person in the field of art and has held various important positions. Currently, he is Member of Advisory Committee, Kala Academy, Goa and Member of Advisory Committee, P.L. Deshpande State Lalit Kala Academy and Director, Janseva Sahakari Bank Borivali," an official press release said here yesterday.

Previously, in March 2018, Mr. M.L. Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Akademies), Ministry of Culture was appointed pro tem Chairman of the Lalit Kala Akademi, pending appointment of a regular Chairman.
In April 2015, the Ministry of Culture had taken over the management of the Akademi, one of its autonomous organizations, in view of the several problems it had been facing in its functioning.
The Ministry had said at that time that it had, over the past few years, been receiving complaints regarding alleged administrative and financial irregularities in the Lalit Kala Akademi.
The Lalit Kala Akademi was inaugurated in New Delhi on August 5, 1954, by the then Minister for Education, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
The youngest of the three academies founded by the Government of India, the Lalit Kala Akademi was established in pursuance of the dream of the first Prime Minister of independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru, and focused on activities in the field of visual arts.
