Vijay Keshav Gokhale appointed as next Foreign Secretary

Mr. Vijay Keshav Gokhale, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs has been appointed as the next Foreign Secretary.
Mr. Gokhale, 58, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1981 batch, will succeed Dr. S. Jaishankar, who will complete his tenure on January 28.
"The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Mr. Vijay Keshav Gokhale (IFS: 1981), Secretary (Economic Relations), Ministry of External Affairs as the Foreign Secretary vice Dr. S. Jaishankar, who is completing his tenure on 28.01.2018," a notification from the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) said.
Before taking over as the Secretary (Economic Relations) in June 2017, Mr. Gokhale was posted as the Ambassador of India in Beijing.
Mr. Gokhale, who has an MA in History (History), Delhi University, has served in, among other places, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Beijing and NewYork. He has also served as Deputy Secretary (Finance), Director (China & East Asia) and Joint Secretary (East Asia) during his stint at the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
He was High Commissioner of India to Malaysia from January 2010 to October 2013. From October 2013 to January 2016, he was the Ambassador of India to Germany, before taking over as Ambassador in Bejing.
