Bye-elections to be held on October 11 for Gurdaspur LS seat in Punjab, Vengara assembly seat in Kerala

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that it will hold bye-elections on October 11 to fill a casual vacancy from Gurdaspur, Punjab in the Lok Sabha and another in the assembly constituency of Vengara in Kerala.
The notifications for the bye-elections will be issued on September 15 and the last date for filing nominations will be September 22.
Counting of votes will be taken up in both constituencies on October 15, an official press release said.
The Commission said it had decided to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verificable paper audit trail (VVPAT) units in all the polling stations in these bye-elections.
"Adequate numbers of EVMs and VVPATs have been made available and all steps have been taken to ensure that the polls are conducted smoothly with the help of these machines," the release added.
The bye-election in Gurdaspur has been necessitated by the death on April 27  of well-known Hindi film actor Vinod Khanna, who represented the constituency in the Lok Sabha as a candidate of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The bye-election in Vengara has been necessitated by the resignation of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader P. K. Kunhalikutty, who was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Malappuram seat that fell vacant following the death of former Union Minister E. Ahamed.
