Six dead, several trapped as landslide hits two buses in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh

At least six persons have died and more people are feared trapped under debris after a massive landslide swept away two buses, a car and a motorcycle in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh late last night, official sources said.
"We have recovered six bodies so far -- three each from the two buses. We are searching for the others," Mandi Deputy Commissione Sandeep Kadam told NetIndian over the telephone from the scene.
Mr. Kadam said there were about eight people in one bus, while there was no clarity about the number of people in the second one. The mishap occurred around 1 am today near Joginder Nagar in the Kotrupi area of the district, he said.
District officials, police, fire brigade and other emergency services personnel, including teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were engaged in the search and rescue efforts. The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals.
Mr. Kadam said tonnes of mud came sliding down onto a 150-metre stretch of the highway, sweeping everything in its path. One of the buses was swept away 800 metres down into a gorge.
Sources said one bus was on its way from Chamba to Manali and the other was on its way from Manali to Katra.
They said heavy rains in the area were hampering the search and rescue operations.
