Goel advises AFI to honour Kerala High Court directive on P U Chitra

Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel today advised the Atheltics Federation of India (AFI) to honour the Kerala High Court directive to ensure the participation of athlete P. U. Chitra in the 1,500 metres race in the IAAF World Championships to be held in London from August 4.
A statement from the Ministry of Sports said here that Mr. Goel talked to AFI President Adille Sumariwalla on the issue and advised him not to contest the directive given by the Kerala High Court as Chitra is otherwise a wild card entry for the World Championship.
The Kerala High Court had yesterday directed the AFI to include the Kerala runner in the team for the World Championships.
Chitra had won the 1,500 m gold at the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar, Odisha earlier this month, clocking a personal best of 4:17:92. She had clocked 4:28 in the inter-state meet. The entry standard for the London event is 4:07.
The AFI had said earlier that the runner was not included in the 24-member team because she had not met the qualifying mark set by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). In her writ petition before the High Court, Chitra argued that her Asian championship win made her an automatic choice for the London meet.
