Rescue efforts continued for the second day today to save an 18-month-old girl, Chinnari, who fell into a 60-feet deep borewell while playing with her sister in a field near their house in Ekkareddyguda village in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana yesterday evening.

Her sister alerted her parents and soon local policemen, fire brigade personnel and doctors reached the scene.

A team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has joined local emergency personnel and a parallel well has been dug to help pull her out, sources said.

Among other things, the rescue teams had lowered a camera to a depth of 40 feet to try and see the baby. She was visible for some time, but officials now think she could have slipped further down, and efforts were being made to lower a camera to a depth of 100 feet.

The rescue efforts were slowed down a bit by rains, but the digging of the parallel well has been going on continuously and efforts are being made to ensure a supply of oxygen to the little girl.

The girl's father, who works as a labourer, has demanded action against revenue officials and the owner of the land who failed to ensure that the borewell was sealed.
