Bus falls off bridge, 10 dead, several injured
At least 10 people died and several others suffered injuries when a private bus they were travelling in crashed off a bridge into a canal near Moolapadu village in Penuganchiprolu mandal of Krishna district in Andhra Pradesh early this morning.
District Collector A. Babu told NetIndian over the telephone from Vijayawada that the mishap occurred around 5 am today when the bus was on its way from Bhubaneswar to Hyderabad.
He said the bus jumped the median on the four-lane highway, a part of the Golden Quadrilateral, and fell into the canal through a gap in the two bridges on either side of the road.
Mr. Babu said some others suffered injuries and were rushed to hospitals in Vijayawada, about 50 km from the scene of the accident, where the condition of one of them was stated to be serious.
The bus, belonging to Diwakar Travels, was carrying 44 passengers in all. The deceased included nine passengers and the driver of the bus, he said.
Local people were the first to rush to the spot and help extricate the passengers from the bus. Senior district administration and police officials also reached the scene shortly thereafter.
