Vikas Swarup appointed as High Commissioner to Canada

Mr. Vikas Swarup, the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, in the rank of Additional Secretary, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to Canada.
Mr. Swarup, an officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and a well-known author, is expected to take up his assignment shortly.
He is, in particular, known for his novel Q&A, which was adopted in film as Slumdog Millionaire, the winner of the Best Film for the year 2009 at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards and BAFTA Awards. His other novels include Six Suspects and The Accidental Apprentice.
As a career diplomat, he has served in Indian missions in Turkey, the United States, Ethiopia, the United Kingdom, South Afica and Japan.
He was appointed as the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs in April 2015.
Born in Allahabad in a family of lawyers, Mr. Swarup studied at the Allahabad University.
