Cyclone Ashobaa over Arabian Sea set to intensify further: IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today said the cyclone  Ashobaa over eastcentral Arabian Sea is expected to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 36 hours.
 
In a pre-cyclone watch issued for Karnataka, Maharashta and Gujarat this afternoon, the IMD said the cyclonic storm had remained practically stationary during the past three hours and lay centred at 1130 hours IST near latitude 17.9 N and longitude 67.2
E, about 590 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 470 km southwest of Veraval in Gujarat and 960 km east-southeast of Masirah Island in Oman.
 
"It would move initially north-northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 36 hours," the bulletin said.
 
Under the influence of this system, rainfall would occur at most places, with isolated heavy falls, over coastal Karnataka, Konkan & Goa and south Gujarat during the next 24 hours, it said.
 
The bulletin said strong winds with speed reaching 70-80 kmph and gusting to 90 kmph would prevail along and off the Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts during the next 24 hours and 90-100 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, during subsequent 24 hours. 
 
It said the sea conditions would be very rough to high along and off the Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours.
 
Fishermen along and off the Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts have been advised not to venture into the sea during the next 48 hours. Fishermen out at open sea are advised to return to the coast, the bulletin added.
