Eminent Gujarati poet Chinu Modi chosen for Sahitya Akademi award

Well-known Gujarati poet Chinu Modi has been chosen for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for 2013 for his book of poetry, Khara Zaran.
A press release from the Sahitya Akademi, the National Academy of Letters, said the book was selected on the basis of the recommendations of a three-member jury consisting of Ms Dhiruben G Patel, Dr Pravin Shanilal Darji and Mr Raman Kantilal Soni.
The award relates to books first published between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2011.
Mr Modi and other Sahitya Akademi Award winners in 23 languages announced on December 18 will be presented the award at a function here on March 11 during the Festival of Letters organised by the Akademi.
The award is the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque, a shaw and a cheque for Rs 100,000.
Mr Modi, 74, is a pioneering poet and also an acclaimed playwright, critic and fiction writer. His works have been translated into English, Hindi and other Indian languages and his plays have been staged around the world.
