30 killed, 17 injured in Assam road mishap
As many as 30 people were killed and 17 others suffered injuries when a speeding truck rammed into a van, which then rear-ended a second van, on the National Highway in Barpeta district of Assam in the early hours of today, official sources said.
Dr Siddharth Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta, told NetIndian over the telephone that the mishap occurred around 5 am today at Doholapara in the Sorbhog police station area.
He said 28 people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital.
He said the victims were mainly labourers from Kholkholi in Dhubri district working at brick kilns in Rangia in Kamrup district. They were heading towards their workplace in the two vans, with their families, when the mishap occurred. He said the victims included several women and children.
Dr Singh said the injured were admitted to the Barpeta Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The truck hit one van, which then rear ended the other which was just behind it, and both vehicles turned turtle in the process, sources said, adding that the driver of the truck was absconding.
