S H Raza, Raghunath Mohapatra, Yash Pal, R Narasimha chosen for Padma Vibhushan

Noted sculptor and architect Raghunath Mohapatra, painter S Haider Raza, and scientists Yash Pal and Roddam Narasimha have been chosen for the Padma Vibhushan awards, the nation's second highest civilian honour, for the year 2012.

Late actor Rajesh Khanna, filmmaker Ramanaidu  Daggubati, playback singer S Janaki, actress Sharmila Tagore, cricketer Rahul Dravid, Mohiniattam exponent Kanak Rele, late actor-comedian Jaspal Bhatti and defence scientist Vijay Kumar Saraswat are among the 24 people selected for the Padma Bhushan.
 
Scientist Ashoke Sen, industrialist Adi Burjor Godrej and boxer and Olympic bronze medalist M C Mary Kom also figure in the list of those chosen for the Padma Bhushan.
 
The President has also approved the conferment of 80 Padma Shri awards.
 
The Padma awards are given for achievement in various disciplines and fields of actiities such as art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature, education, sports, civil service, and so on.
 
The ‘Padma Vibhushan’ is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service; ‘Padma Bhushan’ for distinguished service of high order and ‘Padma Shri’ for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year and are conferred by the President at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhawan sometime around March or April.
