The National Centre of Performing Arts (NCPA) will present operas Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci at the Jamshed Bhabha Theatre in Mumbai on February 18, 20 and 21.

Cavalleria Rusticana is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni and I Pagliacci is an opera in to two acts by Ruggero Leoncavallo.

Since they first burst onto the operatic scene at the end of the 19th century Cavalleria Rusticana and I Pagliacci have more often than not been performed together, and have become known as ‘Opera’s Heavenly Twins’.

Their composers Mascagni (1863-1945) and Leoncavallo (1858-1919) —both of whom did create several other operas— never again quite achieved the success, and therefore world-wide popularity, that has seen Cav & Pag—as they are also frequently and affectionately referred to—featured in so many opera seasons worldwide.

The Symphony Orchestra of India will be conducted by Antonello Allemandi on February 18 and 20 and Zane Dalal on February 21.

Tickets for the shows are priced at Rs.3,000, 2,400, 1,800 and 1,200 while there is a special price of Rs 600 for students against valid student identity cards, a press release from NCPA said.
