Two burglars allegedly broke into the Bhiwandi bungalow of Congress MP Suresh Taware and made away with two kg gold worth over Rs 50 lakh, and Rs 2 lakh in cash, police said.

They also allegedly assaulted the MP's neighbour, who was staying in the bungalow in Thane district in his absence.

Kamlakar Taware, the MP's elder brother, currently lives in the bungalow along with his family. On Saturday, Kamlakar left for Mahabaleshwar with his family and instructed his neighbour Shreenivas (60) to stay in the bungalow till they returned.

Around 2030 hrs, Shreeniwas went to the bungalow, but when he tried to open the door, the two burglars, who were hiding inside, hit him with a rod, police said.

The thieves then dragged Shreeniwas into the bathroom, where they tied his hands and mouth and warned him not to raise an alarm. After ransacking the house, the duo fled early yesterday. The neighbour has been hospitalised, police said.

Kamlakar was informed about the incident yesterday morning. Police has mounted a search for the thieves, the sources added.
