Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust signs MoU with Venice Port Authority

The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) in Mumbai and Venice Port Authority of Italy signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Chennai today as part of efforts for greater cooperation between the two countries in the area of trade, especially maritime activities.

The MoU was signed by Mr L.Radhakrishnan, Chairman, JNPT and Capt Antonio Revedin of the Venice Port Authority was represented by Capt. Antonio Revedin in the presence of Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan.
 
Mr Vasan said JNPT was the largest port in India for solids handling and it had a 55 per cent market share in containers among the major ports of India. Venice is one of the most important European ports for break bulk and project cargo traffic.
 
He said JNPT expected to strengthen its relationship with Venice and enhance direct shipping to and from that port.
 
He said this was bound to be a mutually advantageous relationship for not only the to ports but also for the manufacturing and trade sectors of both countries, he said.
 
"With over 2 million passengers per year, Venice is the first home port for cruise ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The expertise of Port of Venice in cruise shipping could also be shared with JNPT in order that this expanding segment of tourism can develop faster in India," he said.
