16 policemen injured as van hits electric pole in Tamil Nadu


Sixteen police men were injured when the police van in which they were travelling dashed against a roadside electric pole and overturned at Vannanpaaraipatti on the Melur-Sivaganga road near Melur here last night.

Police said the cops were on their way to Ramanathapuram for security arrangements in view of Guru Puja celebrations of freedom fighter Muthuramaligam Thevar when the mishap occurred.

The driver of one of three police vans transporting the cops from Chennai lost control while negotiating a curve and dashed against the electric pole and the vehicle overturned.

The injured cops were admitted to the Government Hospital at Melur. Due to the impact of the collision, the electric pole was uprooted plunging the village into darkness. After a couple of hours, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board employees restored the power supply.
