Police fire in air to control rampaging mob in Jamshedpur

Police resorted to firing in the air after a baton charge failed to control a rampaging mob in this industrial city today following a fight over alleged attempts of encroachment on a piece of government land.

Official sources said the residents of a locality in Sitaramdera police station area opposed the erection of a boundary wall by the management of a private school on a piece of land adjacent to the school. Local people used to cultivate the land.

An altercation started between the two sides which turned into a full-fledged fight with both sides hurling bricks at each other.

Sources said the police reached the scene and baton-charged the mob. When they failed to control the situation they fired four rounds in the air.

There was, however, no report of any injury. Extra police force had been deployed in the area, the sources added.
