Jharkhand: Jail wardens arrested for helping rebels escape

Three jail employees have been arrested for being a party in the Saraikela jail break case in which six prisoners, including two hardcore Naxalites, fled two days ago after overpowering the jailor, police said today.

Chief Warden Umashankar Mishra, Warden Yogendra Paswan and contractual security guard Senga Birua were arrested last night on the instruction of Inspector General (Jails) V K Singh.

Singh had visited the jail situated in the district headquarter town around 40 kms from here yesterday in the wake of the incident.

The chief warden and the warden had also been suspended while the security guard was dismissed, the sources said.

Maoist Sumra Hansda, allegedly involved in 30 criminal cases, and another hardcore Naxalite Balram Sahu overpowered the jailor at gunpoint on August 17 and fled through the main gate. Four other inmates also escaped in the melee.

Meanwhile, a Special Task Force (STF) has been constituted under ASP Deepak Kumar to nab the escapees.
