Sourav Ganguly to play for Pune Warriors India in IPL-4

Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly will be seen in action in the Indian Premier League (IPL)'s ongoing fourth season after Pune Warriors India inducted the southpaw as the replacement for injured Ashish Nehra, the team management said today.

Television reports quoted Pune Warriors India's team director Abhijit Sarkar as saying, "Ganguly will play for the team as a replacement for injured Ashish Nehra."

The former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) captain went unsold in the January player auctions after he kept his base price at $ 400,000 and subsequent efforts from a section to include him went awry after protests from some franchisees.

Ganguly stired the Eden Gardens on Saturday night for some time as people waved to him as he sat among the KKR fans, much away from VIP seats where KKR owner Shah Rukh Khan was cheering his team.

Abhijit Sarkar said, "We had been waiting for the (medical) report of Nehra."

"And we had been in talks with Sourav Ganguly. As soon as we got the report about Nehra's injury, we pleaded with him to join our side and he agreed to do so."

The IPL also cleared Pune Warriors application to allow Sourav Ganguly to play in the IPL-4 edition.

Meanwhile, with reports pouring in the city many die-hard fans thronged at Ganguly's south Kolkata residence to greet him on his new assignment.
