2 killed, 5 injured in explosion in fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu


Two workers were killed and five others critically injured in an explosion at a private fireworks factory at Nathikudi village under Maraneri police limits near Sivakasi here today.


Police said the fire triggered by the huge explosion razed down six production units and godowns inside the factory when the workers were engaged in cracker production at Coronation Fireworks Factory at 0700 hrs, this morning.


The deceased were identified as R Chelladurai (35) and S Irulandi (30).


Personnel of Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services Department from Sivakasi, Sattur and Virudhunagar rushed to the site and were in the process of extinguishing the fire. Senior and revenue officials rushed to the village to arrange rescue operations.


Of the injured, four people were rushed to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) at Madurai, where their condition was stated to be very critical. Another injured was admitted to the Government Hospital at Sivakasi.


Maraneri police have registered a case and are investigating the incident, police added.
