Saina, top shuttlers to participate in India Open Super Series in Delhi

World No 3 Saina Nehwal, along with some international star shuttlers, will be seen in action in the India Open Super Series badminton beginning April 26 here.

As many as 203 players, including 109 men and 94 women, from 16 nations will vie for top honours in the $ 200,000 prize money event at the Sri Fort Indoor Complex, according to Badminton Association of India (BAI) Chairman Akhilesh Das.

"Indian shuttlers have occupied centre stage in recent world events. India has been given the right to host Super Series from 2011 to 2013, which is a tribute to our organisational skills," Das told mediapersons here today.

Many world class shuttlers like Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia), Taufik Hidayat (Indonesia) and Tine Baun (Denmark) have confirmed their participation. However, all top Chinese players, currently dominating the badminton arena, decided to give the event a skip because of their packed schedule.

"We have got the confirmation from the world class players about their participation but with the dates of the new domestic league in China clashing with the Indian Open, the Chinese players were forced skip the event," said the BAI chairman.

This means Indian spectators will miss the likes of Olympic champion Lin Dan and women's world number one and two Wang Shixian and Wang Yihan respectively, in action.

"We have the number one and third rank players in the men's section and the world three and five in the women so there is no question of not having top players," he added.

The Indian Open Super Series 2011 is the fourth stop in the OSIM BWF World Super Series calendar.
