Justice Dinakaran chargesheeted by panel appointed by RS Chairman

Sikkim High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran, who is facing allegations of corruption and land grabbing, he has been chargesheeted by the panel appointed by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari.

Justice Dinakaran, ex-chief Justice of Karnataka High Court, is facing impeachment proceedings. His elevation to the Supreme Court was stalled because of the allegation of land grabbing and corruption.

Vice President Hamid Ansari had appointed a three-member panel headed by sitting Supreme Court Justice Aftab Alam, which has found him guilty on 16 charges.

Justice Dinakaran has been given time till April 9 to respond to the charges levelled against him.

Justice Dinakaran was shifted to Sikkim High Court following his refusal to step down and judicial work had already been withdrawn from him by the Supreme Court collegium.

Justice Soumitra Sen of Calcutta High Court is also facing impeachment proceedings but the impeachment resolution against him is not likely to be introduced in Parliament during the current session and the resolution is likely to be brought before Parliament during the Monsoon Session.

Two-third majority of the members of Parliament is required to remove a sitting High Court or Supreme Court judge through impeachment and during the 64 years of independence, not even a single judge has been removed through impeachment.

Charges against Justice Dinakaran also include those of judicial misconduct.
