The Delhi Metro's Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar corridor opened for commuter operations today, completing an approximately 45 km long line that connects Jahangirpuri in North Delhi to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon.

The 12.53 km corridor from Central Secretriat to Qutub Minar is an underground stretch. With its inauguration by Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit this afternoon, the total operational Metro network has expanded to 138 km with 117 stations.

Gurgaon in Haryana is the second satellite city in the National Capital Region (NCR) to be linked by the Delhi Metro after Noida in Uttar Pradesh.

The Central Secretariat-Qutub Minar section consists of 11 stations: Central Secretariat, Udhyog Bhawan, Race Course, Jor Bagh, INA, AIIMS, Green Park, Hauz Khas, Malviya Nagar, Saket and Qutub Minar.

The sections from Jehangirpuri to Central Secretariat on the one side and the from Qutub Minar to HUDA City Centre in Gurgaon, on the other, had already become operational.

The time taken to travel from Central Secretariat to HUDA City Centre will be approximately 48 minutes, a spokesman for the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said.

The work on the corridor was started in November, 2006. This section is expected to benefit about 1.8 lakh commuters per day by 2011.
