Justice Ramesh Garg is new Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court

The President has appointed Mr Justice Ramesh Surajmal Garg, a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, an official press release said here today.

Mr Justice Garg assumed charge of his new assignment on August 17, reports reaching here said.

Born on June 18, 1948, Mr Justice Garg, who has a Master's degree in Economics and a degree in Law, enrolled as an advocate in August, 1971. He became an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in December 1994 and a permanent judge in July, 1995. He was sent as the first judge and acting Chief Justice of Chhattisgarh in November 2000 when the new state was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.

He was transferred to the Patna High Court in November 2001 and served in the Gujarat High Court from February 28, 2005 before returning to the Madhya Pradesh High Court in September 2007.
