Moily to receive Moortidevi award for Kannada epic poem

President Pratibha Patil will present the prestigious Moortidevi Award of Bharatiya Jnanpith to Union Law & Justice Minister M Veerappa Moily for his epic poem in five volumes in Kannada, "Shri Ramayan Mahanveshanam", here tomorrow.

Mr Moily, 70, a former Chief Minister of Karnataka, is a rare politician who is also well-regarded as a literary figure.

He is an established writer in Kannada and has written four novels, three collections of poetry, three plays and collections of essays, besides his magnum opus, "Shri Ramayana Mahanveshanam".

He was awarded the Second Father Kamil Bulke Ramayana International Award in 2007.

Mr Moily is now working on another epic poem on Draupadi titled "Shrimudi Parikramanam" which is likely to be published within a year.

His two volumes of "Musings On India" is a collection of essays and lectures on Indian history, culture, and society. He has launched a five-volume series, "Unleashing India". The first two volumes "Road Map for Agrarian Wealth Creation" and "Water-Elixir of Life" have already been published.

One of his major novels, "Kotta", has been produced as a telefilm in both Kannada and Hindi, directed by M.S.Sathyu. His novels "Kotta" and "Tembrare" have been translated into Hindi, English and many other Indian languages.

Parts of his ambitious epic have been translated into Hindi and Tamil. The English translation of the entire work is currently in the press.

As a writer, Mr Moily is noted for his concern for the marginalized classes, authenticity of depiction, and skilful craftsmanship. His major works are preceded by extensive research and discussion with concerned experts.

Apart from several awards, Mr Moily has been honoured with honorary Doctorate degrees by the Mangalore University, the Russian Academy and the National Law School University, Hyderabad.
