RRB official gets 9 years RI in CBI case

A special court has convicted Ramesh Kumar, then confidential assistant of the Chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), Jammu, of forging lists of those selected for jobs in the Railways way back in 1992.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jammu (Special Magistrate, CBI Cases) sentenced Ramesh Kumar to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for five years on one count and RI for four years two other counts. Besides, a fine of Rs 5000 was imposed on him for each of the threee offences.
According to a press release issued by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) here today, the sentences had been ordered to run consecutively. The accused would, thus, have to undergo a total imprisonment of nine years and pay a fine of Rs 15,000 for the various offences.
According to the case filed by the CBI against Ramesh Kumar in November, 1992, he had the official stamps and seals of the RRB, Jammu, including the stamp bearing the word "SELECTED" in his custody between March and September, 1992, when he was the confidential assistant to the Chairman of the RRB.
The RRB had invited applications for various posts. After the written test, qualified candidates were called for interviews, after which the merit list of the candidates finally selected was issued under the signatures of the Chairman of the RRB.
The release said the final select panel was sent to the Railway head office at Ferozpur through an RRB official, who used to obtain the receipts on the office copy of the panel for official records.
According to the press release, Ramesh Kumar, while carrying the select panel to the Railway office, Ferozpur, submitted a panel which was a mix of substituted fictitious panels prepared and forged by him along with the genuine panel.
As a result, many candidates whose names figured in the forged list received letters of appointment. Their candidature was cancelled later after the fraud was detected.
The CBI had alleged in its case that the accused had prepared the fictitious panels for some consideration.
