L&T commissions casting manufacturing unit in Coimbatore


Engineering and construction giant Larsen & Toubro (L&T) today commissioned a state-of-the-art casting manufacturing unit (CMU) at its Coimbatore complex.


A press release issued by the company said the CMU was a world class facility and one of the few foundries in the world specialising in the manufacture of engineered large size castings.


The unit will manufacture large size castings in SG and Grey Iron for critical applications in sunrise industries like wind power and other engineering sectors, it said.


According to the release, the CMU is part of the Foundry Business Unit of L&T's Machinery & Industrial Products Division, which already has another fundry at Kansbahal, Orissa.


The foundry will have a peak capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum and is capable of continuous production of castings in the weight range of 10 to 25 metric tonnes each.


The unit, inaugurated by L&T Chairman and Managing Director A M Naik, is part of L&T's plans to set up world class operations at Coimbatore for Light and Precision Engineering. It is the sixth L&T facility to come up in the southern city.
