7.8 quake hits Andaman and Nicobar Islands

A strong earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, shook the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the early hours of today, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

The tremors were also felt in several places along India's east coast, sources said, but there were no reports of any casualties.

According to the IMD, the earthquake occurred at 0126 hours and was epicentred at 14.10 North latitude and 93.01 East longitude, about 260 km north of Port Blair.

About 12 minutes later, there was another quake, epicentred at 34.7 North latitude and 138.3 East longitude in Japan.
