Post 26/11, new system of registration of fishing vessels put in place

The Ministry of Shipping has issued two notifications for streamlining the procedure for registration of fishing vessels, an official press release said here today.

The notifications, issued on June 24, will remove the multiplicity of registration regimes for fishing vessels under various Central and state legislations. They will also help in improving the security along India's long coastline, the release said.

Coastal security has acquired added urgency after the November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai in which ten terrorists had used the sea route to creep into the metropolis in a fishing vessel they had hijacked off the coast of Gujarat.

Under the notifications, registration of all the fishing vessels will henceforth be done under the provisions of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958.

The existing registration format has been revised with inputs from the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries.

One of the notifications issued notifies the revised registration format for the fishing vessels.

The second notification notifies a list of 127 registrars in various coastal states of the country. These registrars have to register the fishing vessels as per the laid down procedure. With these two notifications, a new system of registration of the fishing vessels has been put in place in the country, the release added.
