Lt Gen K R Rao takes over as DG Artillery
Lieutenant General K R Rao has assumed the office of Director General Artillery in the Indian Army, an official statement said today.
Lt Gen Rao was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery on December 20, 1970. He is an alumnus of Sainik School, Korukonda and National Defence Academy, Khadakvasla. He has qualified on the prestigious Long Gunnery Staff Course, Defence Services Staff Course, Long Defence Management Course and attended the National Defence College. He has also completed his post graduation in M.Sc (Defence Studies) from Annamalai University and Masters in Management Science from Osmania University.
In a career spanning over 38 years, he has held many coveted command and staff assignments. He commanded an Artillery Regiment in the J&K, an Armoured Artillery Brigade and an Artillery Division. In staff assignments, he was Staff Captain of an Artillery Brigade, Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, Colonel General Staff of a Mountain Division, Deputy Commander of an Infantry Brigade, Deputy Military Secretary in the Army Headquarters, Military Assistant to the Vice Chief of Army Staff, Additional Director General of Personnel Services. On instructional front, he was Colonel Instructor in the Tactical Wing of School of Artillery. Prior to his present position, Lt Gen Rao was Director General Manpower Planning and Personnel.
He carries with him vast experience of all terrains of the Indian Army from Siachen to the deserts. He has the rare distinction of having served in all the Strike Corps of the Indian Army as Deputy Commander of an Infantry Brigade, Commander Artillery Brigade and General Officer Commanding, Artillery Division. He has also taken part in the 1971 War at Kargil and in Operation Pawan in Sri Lanka, the statement added.
