Hardeep Singh Puri to be Ambassador to UN

Mr Hardeep Singh Puri, currently Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, has been appointed as India's next Ambassador/Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

Mr Puri, 57, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 1974 batch, who will succeed Mr Nirupam Sen, is expected to take up his assignment shortly, a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said.

Mr Sen, whose extended term ended on March 31, has been appointed as a Special Senior Adviser to the UN General Assembly.

Mr Puri, who is regarded as an expert on World Trade Organisation (WTO) issues, long years of experience in multilateral institutions. He was till some time ago India's ambassador to Brazil, where he had an important role in the shaping of the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Summit. Before that he had served as India's Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva and as the Deputy High Commissioner in London.
