Justice Kamaljit Singh Garewal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has been elected by the UN General Assembly as a judge of the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT).

In the election held yesterday, Justice Garewal obtained 154 votes out of 172 cast - the highest number for any candidate, an official statement said.

He will serve in the UNAT for a three-year term, beginning July 1 this year, the statement said.

UNAT was established by the UN General Assembly in 2007 to deal with internal grievances and disciplinary cases related to UN staff and other employees of the organisation. This was the first election to this body since its establishment, the statement added.
